Option 6: University-Based Alternative Certification

For teaching and administrating grades Birth-12

Option 6, the University-Based Alternative Route, is used most often. This option allows completion of the preparation program with concurrent employment in a school district. A candidate receives Temporary Provisional Certificate and participates in KTIP or KPIP. The candidate must complete all requirements within three years (two years for administration) and pass all required assessments, after which they receive a Professional Certificate. Persons interested in this option should contact one of the 14 institutions offering this program (See 16 KAR 7:010 for a description of certificates.)

You are a candidate for this route if you:

  • have a bachelor's or master's degree; and
  • meet university admission standards.
